Named after the local woodland, Black Forest is known by Naseby locals as the best little cafe in New Zealand. We can certainly see where they got that idea.

Surrounded by pine trees and historic buildings that belong on period drama sets, the café offers a portal to another time and place. Add in a great cup of coffee and a big slice of homemade cake served on small vintage plates, and you might just imagine yourself in the Black Forest region of Germany instead.

Established in 2006 by local Wendy Becker, the cafe has changed hands and names in more recent years. In 2022, Kirsty Sloan took the reins, giving it back its original name and crafting a menu that pays homage to its earlier days. On the counter you’ll find jars full of housemade Black Forest slices and melting moments, and seasonal cakes tempting customers from beneath glass cloches. Hot pies and filled rolls liven up the cabinet and provide a quick grab-and-go option, while an all-day menu invites you to sit down and stay awhile. The chicken and waffles are a beloved year-round staple, enjoyed by everyone from tradies and local retirees to cyclists and curling champions. For a joyful nostalgic treat, ice cream sundaes feature on the menu to delight both the young and the young at heart.

During summer, the streetside tables and chairs provide a prime spot to sip coffee (or perhaps an ice-cold beer) and watch the town in action, while the sunny courtyard offers a peaceful hideaway. When Naseby is wrapped in a blanket of clouds, guests can stay toasty by the roaring fireplace, soaking in the characteristic features of the building. The brick archway and heavy wooden ceilings feel safe and warm, with a skylight keeping the atmosphere bright and inviting. It’s a unique setting to come together, so it’s only fitting that the team also offers an evening dining experience for special events.

Few towns of 100 or so permanent residents can pop down the road for an exceptional brew or delicious food that doesn’t come from their own oven. Black Forest is Naseby’s only cafe – and luckily, it’s a very good one.
