Thought you weren’t into tools and machinery? A trip to Hayes Engineering Works & Homestead may just change your mind. Located down Hayes Road in Oturehua, this historic site offers a fascinating insight into the life and legacy of Ernest Hayes. One of New Zealand’s original innovators, Ernest established his enterprise in 1895 and quickly became renowned for creating ingenious agricultural tools.

During that era in Central Otago, farmers were growing short on staff and time – they needed tools that made life easier. Ernest’s designs ranged from rabbit bait cutters to wind turbines, and most notably, a wire strainer that remains in use by farmers across Aotearoa today. With the help of his wife Hannah, who proved to be an energetic saleswoman and cycled great distances to market their products, it wasn’t long before business flourished.

The picturesque and peaceful grounds of Hayes Engineering are home to a variety of buildings and interactive exhibits. Explore at your own pace with a self-guided tour or have one of the knowledgeable staff guide you through the site’s rich history. The museum houses an extensive collection of original items that made Ernest famous, along with stories that delve into his early life and his journey to Central Otago. Visitors can also step foot inside the 1920s mudbrick homestead where Ernest and Hannah spent their later years after raising nine children. The home was fitted with modern conveniences for the time, such as an in-home sound system, overhead shower, and flush toilet.

The factory is the highlight of the Hayes Engineering experience. As your eyes adjust to the dim light, you’ll find yourself surrounded by belts and pulleys, walls lined with original patterns, and workbenches packed with bolts, wrenches, and every imaginable tool. But this isn't just a static display. Every Sunday from the end of October through April, local Ken Gillespie powers up the machinery, offering an engaging demonstration that captivates both young and old.

If you find your stomach starting to echo the growl of the machines, wander over to Hannah’s Cafe. Set in a charming rustic cottage, the cafe serves fresh baked goods and hearty lunches made with produce from the garden, alongside great coffee, cold drinks and ice cream.

Note: Hayes Engineering is closed over winter.
