Widely believed to be the region’s leading producer of fine wine, Pegasus Bay is a true gem in the North Canterbury crown and an extremely memorable place to visit. Entirely family owned and operated, the beautiful winery is a reflection of the passion and energy the Donaldson family has poured into the Pegasus Bay empire.
The building and garden alone are enough to inspire awe. The striking castle–like building is surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens full of beautiful trees, flowers, ponds and red footbridges, which add to the magic of the place. The terrace is perfect for enjoying a few glasses of wine in the sun overlooking the stunning grounds. But as lovely as it is in the warmer months, Pegasus Bay is also a gorgeous spot on cooler days too, with a large fireplace, cosy leather couches and ample seating upstairs and downstairs.
When you start to feel a little peckish, Pegasus Bay has you covered with their sophisticated Mini Deli. Simply grab a handwoven basket, choose from their carefully selected range of local bites from the deli fridges and shelves, add a glass (or bottle!) of your favourite drop and head out to the gardens to find your slice of paradise for the afternoon. Oh, and remember to ask about their wondrous selection of back vintages from the cellars. The Mini Deli is open from Thursday to Monday, 10.30 am to 4.30 pm, all year round. Of course, there's a chance the typical four-seasons-in-one-day weather doesn’t play ball for your outdoor endeavours. In this case, find a table in the ample restaurant or kick back on the couches by the fire.
The wine itself is world-class, sustainably produced and delicious. Make sure you don’t leave the property without a visit to their tasting room, where you can sample and learn about some of the finest wines in New Zealand in the very place they were lovingly created.
