Let’s face it, the virtuosity of contemporary dance is unattainable for most. At Movement Art Practice in Christchurch artistry, interpretation and the wonder of discovery is king. Encouraging people to begin the journey into contemporary dance without judgement. Here you’ll find authentic experiences and authentic movement celebrated tenfold.
Julia Harvie, Artistic Director at Movement Art Practice, has travelled the world as a professional dancer and choreographer and is not one to shy away from an opportunity. Julia - along with Erica Viedma and Paul Young - spied a gap in the contemporary dance community for an inclusive and collaborative space, and so Movement Art Practice was born. Located in the semi-industrial streets of Sydenham, the studio runs three adult classes and two kids classes a week, varying from the complete beginner (who wants to add movement and alignment to their day) to the seasoned professional.
The dance studio is fiercely community-minded with their kaupapa very much interwoven into the cultural fabric of Ōtautahi. The small and welcoming team want to develop not only local artists but local audiences too. On the last Friday of the month, they have The MAP sessions; a blend of improv, works in progress, performances and collaborations by dancers from Movement Art Practice. Make a koha donation, B.Y.O drinks and prepare to be transfixed.
And if that’s right up your alley, be sure to check out the annual Tiny Festival curated by Movement Art Practice. A chance to immerse yourself in contemporary performances of various creative disciplines (everything from Performance Art, Theatre, Dance, Music and Poetry). But best of all, a golden ticket to push yourself out of the ordinary. Oh, and get your groove on at a massive dance party!
