If you find yourself roadtripping along State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Kaikōura, chances are a stop in Cheviot will be needed. It’s the perfect spot for anyone in the car that’s getting a bit peckish, thanks to local legends Harris Farms, who expanded their offering in early 2025 with Harris Farms Butchery, Bakery & Cafe and luckily it’s open seven days a week.

Harris Farms has had a presence in Cheviot and the surrounding region since their origin story began in 1956, when Clare and Dennis Harris first purchased the local butcher shop. Clare had a history of butchery in her family, and in the almost 70 years since Harris Farms was established, it has grown to include a sheep and beef farm, a factory, and a strong presence in supermarkets around the country.

Any time of day you arrive at the cafe is the perfect time to try one of Richard Harris's standout pies, while other things in the cabinet may tempt you, including a whole array of sweet and savoury treats. The coffee machine is always on the go, with the busy baristas caffeinating customers from when the doors first open at 7am. On a sunny day, take full advantage of the outdoor seating and soak up some Vitamin D.

The butcher shop has been ever-present during the Harris Farms' humble journey, and luckily for locals and passers-by alike, the expanded butchery, bakery and cafe gives everyone the chance to experience quality local meats and welcoming hospitality. The butchery section, operated by Linda and her knowledgeable team, is always full of the freshest cuts thanks to the farms and factory being mere minutes down the road. It’s not easy these days to find a supplier that helps create a true paddock-to-plate experience.

Harris Farms has always been driven by providing good-quality local meat and food to their customers, and with the expansion of their butcher shop to include the café, the vision is becoming more true every day. Do yourself a favour and make that pitstop for a pie, coffee, or to fill your fridge and freezer with the very best Harris Farms has to offer.
