Tucked into a calming corner of New Brighton Mall, Kusamono Café is where devotion to the perfect brew echoes the art of bonsai. Leveraging a character-pitched ceiling, natural wood accents and sunny courtyard nursery, owner Aaron Curtis has woven a thread of Japanese style from decor to menu, while retaining a distinctly neighbourhood feel.
Quickly winning over local Brightonites, the story behind what they fondly call ‘The Bonsai Café’ is appropriately one of patient dedication. Aaron began with Shiro Bonsai, an online store and market stall on the side. A trained barista, he recognised the mall’s charm and the area’s renewed optimism as the perfect environment for a unique concept.
The mall itself has become a destination, its red-bricked arcade now lined with an eclectic mix of local businesses. At one end of this inviting passage sits Kusamono Café, decorated with the diminutive trees and specialist supplies offered by Shiro Bonsai. Here, you’ll likely find Aaron working his magic with the steam wand, his potion of choice is Prima Roastery’s Verde, while chatting with regulars whose daily visits have become part of the café’s gentle rhythm. A preference for locally sourced ingredients extends to all other food and drink. Every morning, a tempting cabinet is stocked with Bellbird Bakery’s fresh delights, alongside Aaron’s house-made carrot cake. For something more filling, choose from a considered selection of breakfast, brunch and lunch options, all made from scratch.

At Kusamono, a cup of coffee or matcha is approached with the same meditative reverence as tending bonsai. This consistency gets locals talking, while Aaron’s workshops, supplies and expertise attract enthusiasts from afar. As New Brighton continues its renaissance, you’ll surely be delighted by what is yet another gem, glistening among a treasure trove by the sea.
