If you are a sando aficionado and find yourself in the South Town area of Christchurch city centre, keep an eye out for the striking cobalt blue hue of Tom’s. Delicious sandwiches, expertly made coffee and an array of tempting treats await you inside.

Situated on Southwark Street, part of the W. L. Brown & Co. building, this elevated take on a neighbourhood sandwich shop is a favourite among Ara students, workers in the area and visitors to Ōtautahi who have drooled over Tom’s ‘gram feed. Its small but perfectly formed space has been designed to maximise seating and house a mouth-watering food cabinet.

The namesake owner of Tom’s, Tom Worthington (formerly of Meatball Monday) is no stranger to the Christchurch food scene and it’s clear to see he has put a strong focus on highlighting and supporting local suppliers. Grizzly buns and rolls are the hosts to a creative range of sandwich fillings, local roastery Prima supplies the all important coffee beans and a cake or two from Cakes by Anna (the Anna here just happens to be Tom’s sister).

Now onto the sammies themselves, which are made daily on-site. There are the regulars such as halloumi, preserved lemon and mayo or prosciutto and pepperoncini, and always a vegan option that could tempt even the most hardened of carnivores to try. Rounding out the choices in the cabinet, there is Tom’s take on Kiwi bakery classics, think ginger crunch, pink buns and a jalapeno cheese scone. As you get up to leave, you may very well be tempted by the range of pantry items that are available to purchase such as Boring Oat Milk and Kaitaia Fire chili pepper sauce.

Open Monday - Saturday, whether you pop in for a sandwich on the run or for a more leisurely sit-in ‘spresso, sando and sweet, Tom’s bright blue interior and the tastiness it houses are sure to make your day.
