Tucked into one of the many characterful right-angled coves of Christchurch’s Sydenham, The Fabric of Society on Carlyle Street is a mecca of boutique bolts and threaded advice.

From its gabled roof shed, this beloved business has built a reputation over two decades, nineteen years of which were from its former abode in Rangiora. Owner Emily Hull brought it south to Sydenham. A pop-up was floated at first, but she moved in permanently to establish a bona fide city go-to for all your fabric needs.

Don’t let the concrete flooring and exposed timber trusses fool you; this is a temple of soft linen, indigo and florals. Stand by as helpful staff cut to length across the trestle, or browse a handful of curated homewares: lampshades, felted mushrooms, knick-knacks and must-haves. Everything you need to fit your couch, futon or drapes comes off the roll in store, and there’s a fair few to choose from. If you’ve got the time, stay for a flat white and some guidance, but be sure to ask after the oilcloth they’ve become known for.

Alongside well-regarded New Zealand fabric houses are rolls and scrolls you won’t find on any old shelf. Stock arrives as a colour code and Emily names it herself. Lengths can be sent home on appro to live in the room a while first, and a staff member hired eighteen years ago is never far away.

Part hard-wearing, part soft furnishing, The Fabric of Society pairs industrial bones and high-angled ceilings with delicious patterns and exceptionally warm service. And though the name might be a play on words, it’s most definitely an embodiment of what the store has come to be.
