If you’re in need of a dose of inspiration, hightail it to the creative and cheerful Soul Gallery over on Barton Street. Here, you have permission to lose yourself in all things eclectic and colourful, celebrating the true meaning of New Zealand-made art, crafts and treasures.

Founder Lisa Voigt’s vision for the gallery was to "create a haven where people could come to appreciate a melting pot of New Zealand art and design." It’s safe to say she’s absolutely nailed that. Upon entry, your eyes are spoiled for choice, with a range of paintings, glasswork, prints, ceramics and jewellery (and much more) to peruse. You’ll spot favourites from established Kiwi creatives as well as up-and-coming artists.

Those interested in wall art can browse a number of impressive pieces, like Judy Woods’ layered abstracts, Clare Matthews’s emotive landscapes and Candy Clarke’s high-energy graphic pieces. When it comes to glassworks, Chris Jones and Justin Culina take centre stage, offering small sculptures sure to delight and dazzle you. Alternatively, add some personality to your space with the diverse range of ceramics. You might like Royce McGlashen’s nature-inspired tableware, or be more drawn to Libby Cameron’s weird and wonderful pottery creatures.

And we haven’t even mentioned the extensive range of jewellery. Whether it’s a treat for yourself or a gift for that special someone, there’s plenty to choose from. Most of the pieces take cues from our natural surroundings and resources, featuring organic shapes, Pounamu, Pāua as well as flora-inspired designs.

When it comes to new work, the team hosts monthly exhibitions featuring both emerging and well-known artists, so there’s always something new to discover. Keep your eyes peeled for the latest happenings here.
