What do you get when you combine delicious food + the best cocktails in town + good vibes and atmosphere… it’s Funbuns in the centre of Hastings! 

Co-owner and chef Nicholas moved home to Hawke’s Bay after working for a number of years in Hong Kong and noticed that there wasn’t anywhere in town serving up delicious Asian street food. Opening at the end of 2017, co-owner and bartender Dave quickly came on board, and since then, the two have developed a winning formula. 

Fun by name and fun by nature, the playful character of this eatery is apparent as soon as you step inside and are greeted by the colourful interior and eclectic decor. Large murals painted on the walls include a happy dragon chasing a butterfly, all of which were created by local tattoo artist Tread. There’s also impressive artwork on the panels in the restaurant by Grayson Uncool and in the bathrooms by Abbey Merson. With a range of seating options, from booths to bar leaners to tables that can accommodate larger groups, there’s a spot that suits everyone.

One of the most unique items in the restaurant would have to be the bright yellow ‘NZ Souvenirs’ sign hanging from the roof. It was given to Funbuns by the sweet couple who ran the souvenir and magazine store across the street, which was the longest-running shop on all of Heretaunga Street when it closed. 

Funbuns is addicted to bao buns, and they certainly have perfected their Gua Bao which they make fresh in-house. There are several different bun options, with pork belly and tofu being the most prevalent proteins in that section of the menu. Also on offer is a range of sharing plates that are creative and downright tasty; think Korean cheesy corn and an unmissable Chinese-Italian hybrid of burrata with spiced vinegar and chilli oil (and fried bao bits for dipping). 

There’s a strong emphasis on the drinks side of things, with exciting cocktails, mocktails and teapots to choose from alongside more traditional beer and wine offerings. The cosy cocktail nook is just the place to sit back and savour a delicious drop while you catch up with a friend.
