A darling of the Lower Hutt cafe scene, Janus Bakkerij is a place where tradition meets innovation, where old-school Dutch baking is married with modern, artisanal flair. Originally founded by Joe and Angela Janus, another power couple - Jason and Arna Wnek - have since taken over the reins, bringing with them the energy of their wildly popular Fix Federation.
The bakery’s sleek, black-and-white storefront makes it instantly recognisable from the street, a palette that is seamlessly replicated inside for a cosy, classy feel. And just like any good bakery, it’s the irresistible scents of freshly baked bread and coffee that consume you as soon as you step inside. The hum of a busy kitchen and chatty patrons offers a comforting soundtrack as you peruse the goods displayed in a whopping five-metre-long cabinet, stacked with all manner of sandwiches, slices, squares, and other sweet and savoury treats.
From their golden, flaky pastries to sandwiches brimming with fresh, local ingredients, every bite is made with care. Janus’ donuts are the stuff of legend, the pies have been named among New Zealand’s best, and the artisan bread selection is a carb lover’s dream. The cafe menu serves up bold flavours and perennial crowd-pleasers, from the classics such as eggs benedict drenched in house-made hollandaise to the Full Fix big breakfast - because sometimes, only a serious feed will do.
Janus Bakkerij isn’t just about great coffee and next-level pastries - it tells a proud story of legacy, passion, and a genuine love for feeding people well. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick takeaway or settling in for a lazy brunch, you’ll feel the care that goes into every single bite.
