Homestead Store

For decades, Ashburtonians have furnished their abodes with the help of Homestead Store and its curated collections on Tancred Street. What was once two shops at opposite ends of the arcade is now a single destination for kitchenware, homeware, collectables, clothing and gifts made to last.

Homestead holds the front of the brick-lined arcade, and has become renowned for its window display, which will have you stopping in the street. The owners take it pretty seriously too, going as far as entering international awards for the craft, such is their devotion to making the perfect first impression. Though be assured it's just as carefully arranged inside.

More brick sets the backdrop for honey-toned timber cabinetry and painted dressers, with shelves running from Emma Bridgewater's cheerful stars to the smouldering orange of Le Creuset. A Moorcroft vase takes its own pedestal, one of a few pieces that might stretch the wallet, though the range caters to most budgets, and lives up to a simple philosophy: buy once, buy well. An entire corner is given over to the stout warmth of Barbour, and another section to Burleigh, the English pottery they've championed for three decades.

No doubt shopping can work up quite the appetite, but don't go anywhere: there's even handmade fudge. It's been made in-store since the day after the September 2010 earthquake, so pick from the likes of Pineapple Lump, Lemon Posset and Raspberry Ripple, all sliced to order behind the counter.

Whether you're a lifelong regular or a first-time browser, a cup of tea, a slice of something nice and some expert advice are never far away. Given Homestead is run by multiple generations of the same family, such hospitality should come as no surprise. Nor should the fact that the store is packed to the rafters with beautiful things worth handing down.
