Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa

Most hot pools draw their warmth from deep underground, but Methven's Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa on Mt Hutt Station Road looks skyward instead. Their field of 480 solar panels heats glacial meltwater straight from the Rangitata River, powering a carbon-zero soak at the foot of the Southern Alps.

Canterbury architects Sheppard & Rout designed the approach to evoke the nearby Rakaia Gorge, so you're flirting with calm before you even dip a toe in the water. Follow a stone path between gabion walls spilling with greenery, hop across a reflecting pond and step inside, where a lattice of timber beams crowns the foyer, slatted curves accent raw concrete and the floors are flecked with pale aggregate. Beyond, milky blue pools wind between boulders and tussock.

The bathing splits three ways: families make a splash in the Discovery pools, while the adults-only Tranquility pools run a touch warmer and come with a swim-up bar. Here, cocktails pass through a servery window and a pizza or two floats over in a woven basket. For further indulgence, the Serenity experience pairs a private 41°C timber tub with sauna access, drinks delivered tubside and a complimentary platter of artisan breads and dips (more than a few proposals have been made here). Back inside, a wood-panelled day spa offers facials, massages and a Rasul steam room, while a café overlooking the family pools and nearby peaks keeps everyone fueled. Capacity at Ōpuke is capped, so you'll never find yourself shoulder to shoulder, though weekend slots fill quickly and booking ahead is wise.

What began as a community suggestion decades back has become a year-round drawcard for the area. Ideal for thawing out after a powder day, shaking off a long week, or slipping in for a late-night soak beneath the starry Cantabrian sky, Ōpuke is for anyone enjoying life on and around the maunga whose name it carries.
