Taproom, brewery and restaurant all under the same roof, McCashin’s Brewery in Stoke is a one-stop-shop for beer enthusiasts in Nelson. Walk inside the 1930s Rochdale Cider building (the first cider brewery in Aotearoa), and experience a living, breathing part of New Zealand’s brewing history.

True craft beer revolutionaries, the McCashin’s set out to challenge a duopoly that existed on New Zealand beer back in the 1980s, and it’s safe to say they succeeded.  These days the brewery is still very much a family business, and New Zealand is dotted with craft beer breweries of all sizes.

The brewery restaurant is well known for its steaks and pizzas. Naturally, the menu nods towards brewing: the pizza bases are created with brewers yeast, mussels are steamed with Stoke IPA and chicken is crumbed with Wakachangi chips. All the food is produced on-site and the menu changes with the seasons.

Accompany your kai of choice with a pint of beer or cider, or go for the tasting tray and sample your choice of four McCashin’s brews. There’s nothing quite as unique as sitting down inside the taproom watching the bottling line in full action behind a window.

If you’re after just a small bite to eat, a selection of hand-made pies might just do the trick, and if it’s not quite beer o’clock when you visit, coffee and other non-alcoholic beverages are available.

For those that are interested in learning more about the history and making of beer, a tour of the brewery can be booked online.
