Keen to find that secret local’s coffee spot in Māpua? Make a stop at Java Hut on the main road into town. Owners Tim and Beth O’Farrell are committed to keeping the community well caffeinated and pump out expertly made coffee to a continuous stream of passersby seven days a week.

This funky spot comes complete with a friendly dog, Jane, that welcomes everyone who stops here to refuel. Sun loungers out front invite you to take a moment and enjoy that cuppa while soaking in some vitamin D, and during colder months a fire keeps the little coffee shop with a single communal table warm and comfy.

The building that houses Java Hut was originally a bank in Wakefield, and was moved to this location to function as an antique store. Since then it’s gone through quite the transformation, but still encompasses that feel of a bygone era.

Tim and Beth have introduced a fun way for locals to treat each other to a coffee with a ‘buy a friend a coffee’ system. On any given day a chalkboard on the wall displays a number of names to whom a kind soul has shouted a coffee upfront.

On top of the coffee in all its forms, Java Hut offers a selection of daily homemade baking.
