Elixir Café in New Plymouth is a classic in every sense. Named after a magic potion, the place does operate with a special kind of alchemy. Open since 2006, it’s clear Elixir café is doing a lot of things right judging by the people flowing through the doors over a decade later.
The food is humble and delicious. The breakfast menu is served all day which always gets a big tick in our books. Dependable favourites like eggs benedict, a slap-up breakfast (perfect for those with a big appetite) and legendary mince on toast all feature on the menu. The portion sizes are generous and so is the service. Friendly and attentive, you really feel like you’ve been welcomed into the fold.
The walls of Elixir could only be described as a “hall of fame” documenting the famous patrons who have frequented this New Plymouth institution over the years. A who’s who of famous rugby stars (past and present), musicians including Fat Freddy’s Drop and The Black Seeds, actors and other sports stars have all kindly signed their plates for display. Gazing at the kiwiana decor while waiting for your kai certainly keeps you entertained (and beats mindless scrolling). Oktoberfest inspired wooden tables are available out front and make a good option for larger groups or those wanting to watch passersby on the main drag.
There’s something comforting and familiar about this place even on a first visit. Elixir Café is the ultimate trifecta; great coffee, hearty dishes and good vibes.
