It’s all in the name. Emmalou Macaron are purveyors of the prettiest handmade french macarons you ever did see, plus champions of delicious kai and coffee to accompany their namesake. Taking pride of place on the prominent corner of Devon Street East and Liardet Street, the well-positioned heritage café is easy to locate in downtown New Plymouth.

Emmalou started from humble beginnings initially making macarons for friends and family, quickly expanding to a market stall at the well-loved Seaside Market at Ngamotu Beach, and then the current iteration which opened back in 2015. The offerings have evolved too. Emmalou Macaron and Coffee House now serve a dedicated brunch menu with classics like French Toast and Egg Benedict, and the cabinet is heaving with a range of beautifully presented seasonal salads and treats. But don’t be fooled, macarons are the undisputed hero here. In fact, half their cabinet is filled with an assortment of various macaron flavours that have been crafted to perfection. A harmonious blend of the right crisp to chew ratio, sweetness and filling make these fancies rather special. The fan favourites are Snickers and Salted Butter Caramel which are both highly delectable.

The café is bright and welcoming as are the staff.  You can choose to sit inside or out, but perhaps most importantly we recommend getting in early because Emmalou’s bestsellers fly out the door. If you can’t visit this popular haunt for your macaron fix, you can order them online for NZ delivery (*fist pumps all round*).
