Stumble a few hundred yards back from the beach, and seek out Proof and Stock, the quintessential coffee outpost inside a converted New Plymouth garage. Owners Tane Morgan and Adrianna Greenhill, are the force behind this busy neighbourhood coffee hangout that’s a runaway favourite with locals.

If you’re unsure of the exact locale, don’t despair, a large mural of an astronaut holding a single coffee bean by local street artist Milarky marks the spot. The artwork is embellished across the other nearby garage used for roasting the Proof and Stock coffee beans. Once inside the garage, you’ll quickly lock eyes on the humming coffee machine which pumps out stellar espresso time after time. A couple of old reclaimed cinema seats are available to plop yourself down on while you await your morning brew.

The Proof and Stock garage is the ideal place to restock your coffee supplies for home too, with the option to purchase beans or grounds to takeaway. Forgot your coffee tin? No worries. Proof and Stock have coffee flasks for sale complete with their signature tiki brandishing coffee handles. If you’re lucky, you may find a limited edition one.  These bespoke flasks are made in collaboration with a local artist and are highly sought after, so don’t hesitate to buy.

Customers come and go during the morning rush; a mum on the daycare drop off, a construction worker, a dog walker. It’s certainly the hub of the community, a place you can find a friendly smile and a tip-top coffee. We can thank Tane and Adrianna’s kiwi ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit for sharing this little garage of goodness with us all.
