Adventure sits comfortably alongside true Kiwi hospitality at River Valley Lodge, where days spent deep in the Rangitikei gorge end with good food, crackling fires, and the soothing sound of the river below.
There’s a raw, unpretentious energy to River Valley that feels refreshingly down to earth. Guests gather in cosy communal spaces after long days outdoors, meals are made with care, and evenings often stretch out longer than planned thanks to the quiet pull of being properly away from it all. The dramatic Rangitikei gorge feels wonderfully untouched, with steep hill country and fast-moving water shaping much of the experience here.
River Valley’s story began in 1982 around Grade 5 whitewater rafting, and the river remains firmly at the heart of things. For thrill-seekers, it offers one of New Zealand’s most technically challenging commercially rafted experiences, while gentler Grade 2 trips provide a slower-paced way to soak up the scenery. Beyond rafting, guests can explore the surrounding landscape on horseback or e-bike, join multi-day riding experiences, unwind in the spa and sauna, or simply settle in and enjoy the view. Accommodation ranges from comfortable lodge rooms and shared options through to private cottages.
What gives River Valley its staying power is the depth of connection behind it. Four generations of the same family have shaped the lodge, while a long-running commitment to conservation - including predator trapping and native restoration - has helped endangered whiō return to this stretch of river. It’s a place built around adventure, but centred on something deeper: genuine care for the land and the people who come to experience it.
