Appreciative of the time when going to the pictures was a real experience, Rubys is a beautiful time warp experience where heavy curtains, plush velvet seating and dim lighting all pay homage to the days of early movie stars like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Don’t be fooled into thinking you can’t see the latest blockbuster here though, as Rubys makes sure the films it shows appeal to a wide audience, from foreign arthouse flicks to recent hits.
Predominantly loved by a loyal local following, Rubys' customers come for the movies as much as the smiley welcome and the service throughout the movie (order a local craft beer every 20 minutes, delivered right to your seat, if that takes your fancy). And if you’re planning on attending a film here, make sure to come early, as waiting in the lavish lounge is an experience in itself.
The two theatres are both cosy and intimate, with the bigger seating 37 people and the smaller, ‘the snug’, just 12. Huge leather chairs with plenty of room to curl up on and blankets scattered throughout the room make you feel like you can get properly comfortable.
Popcorn, Pringles or lollies, the best thing about watching movies is snacking while you do it, and with a sign here declaring ‘people who love to eat are always the best people’, it would be rude not to try the famous grilled toastie, the antipasto platter or the array of sweets (think aptly named desserts like ‘Sassy Sunday’ and ‘Moorish Marilyn’). Relive the days of old and make going to this cinema your next treat for a night out.
