We won’t lie. Any active adventure we embark on has to have good food and drink in close proximity – and that’s why Velo Café & Beer Garden was always going to win in our books.
Just a 10-minute drive from Wānaka town, Velo is located at the base of Bike Glendhu, a beloved mountain biking park with scenic trails for every age and ability. Whether you’re refuelling after a high-intensity ride or simply visiting for the food (no judgements here), Velo is a cool and laid-back destination that draws everyone out of the main town.
Open from 9am until later in the evening, Velo switches up its offering to suit the time, mood and weather. In the morning, you’ll find go-getters enjoying coffee and scones while groups of mates gather for beers and pizza as the day goes on. The menu is a celebration of local producers, with wholesome treats from Good Roots Feasting and Scroggin filling the cabinet, White Rabbit Cakes on the counter, Sanga’s Pies hot to go, and craft beers from local favourites b.effect, Ground Up and Rhyme & Reason. Things are all go in the kitchen too, with artisan pizza, nachos, sandwiches, salads, and more made on-site with lots of heart.
There’s nothing like hanging out at Velo – especially when the sun decides to visit too. The lush (dog-friendly) lawn is filled with picnic tables and beanbags, as well as a swing set, playhouse and sandpit for wee ones to run free while mum and dad relax. Next time you're racing around on two-wheels or wandering local DOC trails, add Velo to the itinerary and make your outdoor excursion that little bit sweeter.
