Fitting seamlessly into the southern shoreline of Lake Wānaka, Edgewater Hotel is a classic, understated resort that proves working with the landscape is always the most elegant option. The only accommodation that can call these shores its front doorstep, guests can enjoy 106 lake-facing rooms plus amenities across ten acres of pristine grounds.
The buildings follow the natural contour of the lake's edge, achieving a quiet harmony with their surroundings. Manicured lawns, a reflective pond edged with tussocks, trees hugging the structures, and native plantings all blur the line between shoreline and premises. Grey render and dark timber cladding emphasise this connection to the land, while gabled metal roofs and sharp angles echo the mountainscape of the region.
The interior decor sticks to earthy, natural tones and that cosy mountainside lodge feel. Each room offers either a patio or balcony overlooking the landscape, with large windows framing the lake and those iconic peaks that plunge into it. You get the feeling it’s all designed to let the beautiful outdoors in, rather than shut it out. And after all, why not?
Although the setting is pristine, Edgewater prides itself on relaxed, genuine Kiwi hospitality. An unhurried approach that's well received by those who've spent a day carving some pow’, hitting the trails, or weaving through the vibrant cafés, boutiques, and lively waterfront of the bustling Wānaka township.
Sargood’s Restaurant offers a full buffet breakfast, providing the fuel guests need to charge into their day, while the Wineglass Café & Alcove serves delicious bites and brews throughout the day. The glass-walled Pavilion, its floor timber salvaged from the Christchurch earthquake, accommodate an increasing number of people wishing to wed or celebrate in such a spectacular setting.
Since opening in 1986 as Wānaka’s second hotel in a century, Edgewater has enjoyed remarkably stable ownership. Many of today’s owners bought their units off the plans and have nurtured the resort’s enduring connection to both land and community, becoming synonymous with the town’s excellent hospitality. Embracing sustainability, honouring the landscape, and providing excellent service in everything they do, it's easy to see why the Edgewater has adopted the ethos of 'At Nature's Pace'.
