Artspace Aotearoa is a gallery that is true to its name. This non-commercial, non-collecting art organisation is, quite literally, a space for art, hosting exhibitions that contribute to the discourse surrounding contemporary art both in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Funding for Artspace Aotearoa primarily comes from Creative New Zealand and ASB Community Groups, along with other sponsors including the notable Chartwell Trust, Auckland Council and Art News.

The gallery itself is an extremely modern and innovative space. Artspace Aotearoa draws on every crevice of the building to exhibit contemporary art. Artspace Aotearoa has recently moved to the ground level of the same building, providing ease of access for visitors and a new space for contemporary art in Aotearoa New Zealand. The
move is part of a new strategic plan Te Ara Tipu - The Pathway to Growth, drawing upon the core concept of the proverb ‘Ka Mua, Ka Muri’ (We Walk Backwards into the Future).

Although the gallery may seem intimidating to those who have not experienced contemporary art in its full glory, there are many accessible ways to visit and engage with Artspace Aotearoa. The gallery has its own reading room with books, magazines and periodicals. Public programmes featuring artist talks and curatorial talks are held regularly and limited edition artist creations are available for purchase to fund the gallery space.

As one of the leading organisations for contemporary art, Artspace Aotearoa is a dynamic and intriguing gallery within the Karangahape Road district. Keep an eye on their website for upcoming exhibitions and an eye on their ever expanding connections to other art organisations and galleries throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.
