There is nothing quite like a freshly baked pastry to start the day, a simple fact well grasped by those at Mor Bakery in Auckland. Whether you’re lusting after a pain au chocolat, a savoury galette or something slightly more experimental, the Remuera-based micro bakery specialises in all things viennoiserie and it continues to delight its customers, time and time again.
Mor’s brick and mortar space may be only small, but it’s welcoming and there’s no shortage of community feel. Early mornings are par for the course, to ensure that everything is freshly baked for the day ahead. There’s a strong emphasis on quality, so it should come as no surprise that everything is made in house, with the one exception being the lovely sourdough loaves sourced from their friends at Florets Bakery.
Of the goodies on offer, the almond croissants are always hard to resist. Another item to sell out daily is the Kouign Amann (affectionately nicknamed ‘Queenie’), lovingly created using honey, fennel seeds and sea salt. Embracing whatever produce is in season, the menu at Mor constantly changes - with a long time favourite being when stone fruit is pleasantly abundant. No strangers to experimentation, flavour combinations can sometimes sound slightly obscure, but the reward is usually well worth the risk!
Mor’s journey began back when two talented ladies shared a workbench whilst studying pâtisserie at university, who then reunited many years later, both having returned from overseas adventures. Working together once more, they realised their shared vision for opening a place of their own. Fast forward past the plotting and the scheming to now, where that vision has become their reality.
Like any good neighbourhood bakery, Mor is a place where visitors are warmly welcomed and locals return for more. And regardless of which camp you may fall into, a happy belly is guaranteed.
