Pulling up at the entrance to Te Kano is sure to garner some gasps from the passenger (or bike) seat. Surrounded by rows of lush vines with breathtaking views over the Kawarau River and iconic mountain range, this cellar door offers a treat for the senses well before the first glass of wine is poured.

The building itself seems almost as if it grew from the earth rather than being constructed by human hands. Tucked in amongst the vines, this award-winning architectural marvel blends seamlessly into its natural environment. Its weathered steel exterior transitions into a sleek, sophisticated interior, mirroring the region’s stark yet soft and fierce yet fragile beauty. Te Kano’s deep respect for the land is evident in every detail, from the building’s design (constructed from repurposed shipping containers and sustainable materials) through to the winemaking process.

The cellar door experience is both refined and relaxed, welcoming groups of cyclists and wine connoisseurs alike. Guests can enjoy tastings that range from the light and delicate Blanc de Noir to the dark and rich Pinot Noir, all while engaging in captivating conversations with the knowledgeable and friendly Te Kano team. Our favourite part, though? The build-your-own-picnic shelf, stocked with local Central Otago chutneys, pinot and plum fruit pastes, artisan olives infused with truffle oil, cheese, cured meats, and more. The concept is simple: fill a basket, find a comfortable bean bag on the expansive lawn, spend a leisurely afternoon snacking and sipping wine with friends.

After just one taste, there’s no mistaking that Te Kano crafts exceptional wine, from the ‘Life Series’ that blends parcels of fruit from a mix of their four vineyards, to the ‘Land Series’ which is made in extremely small quantities from single vineyards. However, the vision goes far beyond a beautiful bottle of wine. The Northburn vineyard is home to the winery’s extensive kōwhai regeneration project and you’ll spot these native plantings nestled in the soil around the cellar door and even illustrated on the Te Kano label. The Māori translation of “the seed,” Te Kano is certainly nurturing something special for wine lovers of today and tomorrow.
