Roxburgh may be a small town, but Feinerman’s General Store delivers a specialty grocery store experience that rivals even the big cities.

The building first opened as a general store in 1887, although we’re not sure there were any jars of dukkah or collagen powder on the shelves back then. After moving to the Teviot Valley in 2014, Sally and Carl Feinerman bought the building in 2017 and spent 6 months restoring the space, exposing the iconic schist stone features as a reminder of the building’s rich history (plus, it looks really good). With Sally’s background in health and fitness paired with Carl’s handiwork as a builder, everything fell into place.

From the beginning, Feinerman’s has provided the means to live well through whole foods, with the later addition of nourishing care products and thoughtful homewares rounding out the holistic offering. All of the beautiful display shelves and countertops that fill the spacious interior have been hand-crafted by Carl to accommodate the diverse range.

In the food section, you’ll find well-known names such as Ceres Organics, Pepper & Me, Pukka and Chantal, mixed in with brands unique to Central Otago including Ollie’s Olive Oil, Eden Orchards juices, and honey from both Forage & Gold and Marsh’s – to name a few of many. Whether you’re stocking up on Rail Trail snacks, baking essentials, spices, organic meat, grains or condiments, Feinerman’s seems to have every ingredient for every recipe.

Wander to the other side of the store to browse a range of homewares and products to complement your fridge and pantry. There’s a library of recipe books to inspire your next feast (featuring Ōtautahi’s Two Raw Sisters and Alby Hailes from Ōtepoti), zero waste food storage alternatives, natural hair and skincare products, stunning glassware and ceramics, and one of the largest refill stations in the region with an extensive Ecostore range available. If you’re keen to dive into the selection of dietary supplements but not sure where to start, it’s nice to know Sally is on hand to support you with expert knowledge personalised to your individual wellbeing.
