Found in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Christchurch's Riverside Market, is the small but perfectly primed kitchen that Black Burger calls home.
What started as an idea born out of lockdown boredom, quickly gathered pace, and for those of you that salivate over a classic LA-style cheeseburger, this is the place for you.
Black Burger is motivated by one mission… to source the finest ingredients and from these make the best damn cheeseburger in New Zealand. While this may sound simple, the execution is beyond delicious, from the Canterbury-reared Black Origin wagyu used to make the patties, to the Grizzly brioche buns and the crowd favourite McClure’s Pickles.
The menu here is deliberately paired back, with five classic options (including two vegetarian/vegan) and four on the “Not So Secret Menu”, for those of you wanting a bit of a twist on things. Of course, it wouldn’t be an American-style burger joint without the sides, triple-cooked Agria fries and beer-battered onion rings are the name of the game, and it’s hard to go past one of their milkshakes (chocolate, strawberry or vanilla if you please).
The beauty of Black Burger and its market set-up is the range of seating choices. You can sit up at their bar overlooking the grill and eyeing up your order, on a lovely sunny day, head out to the communal seating area on Oxford Terrace and, if the weather isn’t playing ball, there are plenty of other indoor options dotted around the building.
So next time you are at Riverside and pondering what to order, why not try Black Burger.
