Tucked away in the SALT District, Bohemian Bakery’s second storefront is a cozy enclave filled with the smells and sounds of a traditional bakery humming away as it pumps out some of the most delicious baked goods to be found in the CBD. Follow your nose to the Little High Eatery car park on St Asaph St, and poke around in the far corner to find the charming bakery entrance.

When Maka Angyalova got sick of her corporate job she decided she wanted to bake. She mastered the art of pastry and opened Bohemian Bakery in Sumner three years ago. After attracting a large and loyal following, she opened the centre city counterpart which boasts the same quality with even more options.

Here you’ll find tasty bites like the ever-popular Portuguese tart featuring homemade custard on a buttery flaky base with a sprinkle of cinnamon. It's light, creamy and extremely morish. Their almond croissant is another top seller, with other vegan and gluten free items also available.

Bohemian’s award winning sourdough bread is another aspect of the business that keeps patrons coming back. It’s made the traditional way without any preservatives and is fermented slowly giving it the right balance of tart and chew factors and plenty of enzymes to support gut health. Stock up on bread here Wednesday-Sunday.

An “ever changing” menu offers heartier items like soups, salad plates, sweet tarts and quiche all for around $5-15. Bohemian uses produce from Cultivate, a Christchurch grower who works with disadvantaged youths, to plate dishes that are made with local and impactful ingredients. Catering for offices and parties is available.

The fit-out here is as artful and satisfying as the baked goods themselves. Natural wood, exposed brick, a shiny espresso machine and a birds eye view of the bakery create an experience that goes far beyond the same old coffee and croissants routine. The downstairs barista serves C4 coffee drinks all day long making Bohemian the perfect cafe turned working bakery for a grab and go treat, a long coffee catch up or as your source for take home breads and more.
