Sweat and tears are a given, but there was definitely no blood involved in the birth of Grater Goods. A fifth-generation ‘butcher’ and longtime vegan, Flip Grater has grown her business from a hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop to Christchurch’s favourite plant-based deli and eatery.

For the past several years, Grater Goods has been tucked away in the industrial backstreets of Sydenham. However, it was time to make room for a greater culinary vision. In March 2025, the team moved from Orbell Street to High Street, unveiling a new chapter: GG Bistro.

This Parisian-inspired inner-city space is light and airy, blending the old-school charm of a French bistro setting with a modern edge.  Think warm walnut tables, deep navy walls, vintage decor, antique plates, and lush greenery – a beautiful, unique environment that offers a welcoming escape in any season.

Working towards keeping this planet habitable for future generations has always been the core ethos of Grater Goods – and that mission continues to thrive at GG Bistro. Here, indulgence, creativity, and sustainability come together – delicious proof that “ethical hedonism” is absolutely possible. Tuck into vegan snails (escarfaux), seaweed caviar, decadent burgers, and elegant petit fours – dishes so good, even the most devoted carnivore will waver. Pair it all with a thoughtfully curated selection of French and NZ wines, as well as great cocktails, and you’ll find yourself lingering over long lunches, intimate dinners, and afternoon tipples in the sun. Short on time? The bistro’s well-stocked deli has everything you need for a next-level picnic or antipasti platter.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the plant-based dining concept, GG Bistro invites everyone to experience a fresh take on French cuisine. Trust us, you won’t miss the butter.
