Kokomo brings a modern coastal dining experience to Ōtautahi Christchurch. Nestled within The Welder, the restaurant inhabits an old signwriters building repurposed for hospitality use for the first time in 2023 by owner-operators Nikki and Toby Eaton, who also operate High Street restaurant Rascal

The interior of Kokomo, like its menu, has been designed with a coastal mindset. Think loads of greenery, touches of blue, cane lighting, kitschy vintage artworks reminiscent of batches by the sea and plenty of light pouring in. The streetside window opens right up, allowing a continuum of the restaurant space all the way from the indoor courtyard of The Welder across to the sunny outdoor tables on Welles Street.

Different spaces within the restaurant allow for everything from casual drinks by the bar to intimate or large group dining and chef’s tables alike. There’s even an option to sit along a window looking into the open kitchen – the perfect option for those who like to see what’s going on behind the scenes while enjoying a bit of privacy.

The menu sees influences of New Zealand, Pacific and Asian cuisines with a twist. Imagine items such as Paua Pastries, Tuna Tostadas, House Baked Focaccia with Black Garlic Butter, Red Goat Curry, or during the day check out the Buffalo Fried Chicken Croissant or Bulgogi Beef Eggs Benedict.

Open morning til late, Kokomo is a spot to head to whether you’re after a boozy brunch, an interesting lunch, a few drinks after work or a sit-down dinner. Coffee brewed here is worth a mention as well, as Kokomo is the first establishment in Christchurch to create its caffeine goodness with Wellington-based Flight Coffee. Offering neighbourhood vibes and a casually cool atmosphere, Kokomo is a destination for any occasion.
