This might come as a surprise to you, but one of Christchurch’s greatest specialty coffee shops is tucked away in an industrial warehouse space in Wigram. Opened in 2022, Sala Coffee delivers a refined third-wave coffee experience with community at its heart.

Before setting up in Ōtautahi, Eduardo spent years immersed in the specialty coffee scene across London, São Paulo and eventually Aotearoa. His deep knowledge, passion and respect for the craft are evident in every cup at Sala. The coffee menu is small but carefully curated, always favouring quality over quantity. Whether you're grabbing a quick flat white or settling in with a smooth filter brew, every coffee is made with the same level of care.

Sala doesn’t rely on a single supplier, which means there’s always something new to discover. Beans from acclaimed roasters across New Zealand, Australia, Japan, the Czech Republic, Scotland and beyond regularly feature on the menu, making it an exciting place for coffee lovers to explore. Rumour has it the team are also working on their own in-house roast, which promises to be well worth the wait.

While the focus is undoubtedly coffee, the food offering holds its own. Expect a simple, seasonal line-up of goods to enjoy alongside your brew, from toasties using fresh focaccia made in-house to Grizzly donuts and pastries. If you work or live nearby, consider yourself very lucky.

‘Sala’ is Portuguese for living room, a nod to Eduardo’s Brazilian roots but also a reflection of the warm and welcoming space he’s created. Brewing a great cup of coffee is important but it doesn’t mean much if people aren’t at the centre of it all. Community, creativity, and care are the ingredients that make Sala’s specialty coffee that extra bit special.

P.S. The Sala team love getting together with fellow coffee creatives so keep an eye out for upcoming collaborations and events, including bi-weekly mindful brew sessions, tastings, and more.
