Decibel Wines is a counter-culture winery. Uh, what does that mean? They create wines that are fine but always fun, adventurous but always approachable. They play nice with wine growers across the region but they don’t exactly play by the same rules as other wineries. In other words, they’re anything but boring.

Decibel was founded in 2009 by Daniel Brennan, a former rock band manager who has since become a bit of a rockstar himself in the local wine industry. He moved from his home in Philly to the wide-open landscape of Hawke’s Bay in 2008, with zero contacts but infinite passion to learn about wine growing and this unique region. Dan honed his craft, made deep connections with local growers, and turned his initials (the musical symbol for decibel) into a beloved wine label.

Today, there are around 17 varieties available across the three wine ranges: Decibel, Giunta and Testify. Naturally, Decibel is the heart of the business, featuring the iconic Martinborough Pinot Noir (aka the reason Dan moved to New Zealand) and Malbec, as well as a refined Chenin Blanc and zesty Sauvignon Blanc. Giunta is the youngest of the pack, known for its fresh and experimental releases that change regularly, whereas Testify is an expression of the very best liquid masterpieces they can possibly create. The team is dedicated to producing wines from sustainable sites, working with many fully organic growers while inspiring others to make the switch.

At the end of 2021, Decibel opened its tasting room on the corner of Hastings’ main street, inviting everyone in the neighbourhood to enjoy delicious wines alongside a lively calendar of community events, from vintage markets to art exhibitions. Casual tastings are paired with tasty Tio Pablo snacks (it’s corn chips and salsa over cheese and crackers here) and the full range is available to take home, with four taps to fill up your reusable bottle.

Decibel features on the wine list at nice restaurants (including Dan’s family restaurant, McCrossen’s Tavern) back in Philly, independent wine stores and specialty grocers. If you like your wine with a side of fun, these are the drops for you.
