Party of two or twenty, there’s a seat for everyone at Off The Track. Nestled between Hastings and Havelock North, this is a beloved neighbourhood spot that keeps diners coming back for its simple yet delicious classics, expansive garden surroundings and stunning views of Te Mata Peak.

While Off The Track is a longstanding favourite in Hawke’s Bay, it hasn’t been without its challenges. In 2023, a devastating fire forced the new owners, Chris Whyte and Fiona Le, to close the restaurant. Exactly one year later, Off The Track had its revival, reopening to reveal the original layout but with an all-new contemporary fitout. Cue the standing ovation.

With seating for around 220 guests, the restaurant offers two large indoor dining rooms, perfect for hosting private gatherings, as well as a cosy conservatory and spacious courtyard areas. The lush outdoor garden is ideal for friends to sit with a charcuterie board and a bottle of Hawke’s Bay wine or local craft beer while their kids run wild on the playground and trampoline.

Back in the kitchen, the chefs focus on perfecting classic dishes, letting the fresh ingredients from local suppliers and their own herb garden do the talking. The menu strikes a balance between being exciting enough for foodies and approachable for those craving a great plate of fish and chips or a juicy burger. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are easily found, and there’s a kids menu for little ones who’ve worked up an appetite on the slide. Off The Track excels at making everyone feel at home – and that’s an admirable achievement in our books.
