Apart from those living under a giant rock, every soul in Hawke’s Bay is familiar (and likely obsessed) with the irresistible baked goods from modern French bakery, Ya Bon.

Founded by Andrea and Moïse, Ya Bon has been a beloved name for years, supplying top restaurants and cafes in the region, while also creating Cupple, their cafe in Hastings managed by First Hand Coffee. The desire to create a destination that fully reflected their identity, with a focus on simplicity, quality, and community, saw the couple open Ya Bon Table in June 2024.

Before we dive into the baked goods, let’s take a moment to appreciate the space itself. The design is minimalist and relaxing, creating a serene atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. Light wood accents and soft green furnishings form cosy pockets, perfect for sipping Allpress coffee with friends. It’s the small, thoughtful details that make it extra special – like the leafy ficus in a large clay urn, casting gentle shadows across the textured walls. Delicious.

“Y’a Bon” translates to “it’s good” in Créole (or “c’est bon” in French), a nod to Moïse’s heritage. And after sampling the bakery’s offerings, we can confirm: it’s very good. Alongside loaves of the best sourdough in the Bay and French pastries, Ya Bon has introduced an uncomplicated menu of small plates that reflect the food Andrea and Moïse love to eat at home. Think simple but spectacular combinations that hero local and seasonal ingredients: fruit toast with burnt butter and caramel, poached eggs and dukkah, and buffalo cheese and fennel olive oil. Sourdough toasties, fresh filled baguettes and salads are a popular lunch option for lucky Havelock North locals.

Before you leave, don’t forget to browse the shelves of artisan goods. There’s Duck Island ice cream in the freezer next to boxes of Ya Bon croissants ready to bake at home, a selection of preserves, Allpress coffee products and more.
