Hastings is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, with many pockets around the centre seeing new buildings and renovations come to life. One such space is the Municipal Building, part of Toitoi - Hawke's Bay Arts & Events Centre. There is a collection of interesting businesses and services in the building, and one that deserves plenty of attention is Cellar 495.

Opened in September 2022, this is Hastings’ newest wine bar, bistro, tasting room and wine shop. At the helm is the world’s 495th Master of Wine, Michael Henley, only the 16th New Zealander to hold this title. Michael has always had an interest in tasting and sharing new and exciting wines so when he achieved his Master of Wine he started an online platform, and Cellar 495 is the physical extension of that.

Dim lighting and dark interiors set a cosy and inviting vibe. Settle into your seat and take in your surroundings, including the bar with its very impressive lineup of wine bottles in the background. This is the place to come to branch out and try different wines, particularly from wineries that do not have cellar doors. Pop in during the afternoon for a Hawke’s Bay wine-tasting flight, where Michael and his team will serve you a taste of the region. If you try a wine you love, you’re able to buy a bottle and take it home.

When it comes to the food at Cellar 495, head chef Carlita Campbell has gone for a casual and relaxed approach. The menu is designed to be enjoyed grazing-style, and there is a real bistro feel to the dishes as well as obvious support for local suppliers. Start by ordering a few plates, and as your afternoon or evening progresses, see where the dining experience takes you.

Celebrating and showcasing wine is at the heart of Cellar 495, and whether you want to do a full flight tasting or simply try a completely new and different wine, this is the place to go.
