Taper Eatery brings a sharp dose of city chic to little old Levin: think retro-urban decor, multi-textured walls, warm lighting, and banging tunes that push the energy a notch higher. And of course, classic café eats that hit the spot without making a fuss.

The space began life as the Clarks Clothing store, the longest-running family business in Levin for over 100 years. From the moment you step in, you notice a punchy, confident atmosphere that respects those historic roots while bringing an unapologetically contemporary flair. Vintage posters, formica tables, and retro chairs mingle with sleek cafe fittings, while menus are scrawled on blackboards and scrolls hanging on the walls. Meanwhile, the all-female crew deliver excellent service around the clock, dishing out fantastic food and robust banter in equal measure.

The menu is seasonal, steering you toward the freshest local produce. In summer, you'll see crisp salads and smashed avo to match the easygoing days, while winter brings heartier options like loaded fries or the indulgent chicken and waffles. Signature favourites include the smash pattie burger, chicken tacos, and a build-your-own breakfast, and most items can be made gluten-free.

Taper isn’t just another café in Levin; it’s a space where design, personality, and good, classic fare converge. The retro-chic interiors set a backdrop for family warmth and creative energy, while the menu pivots with the seasons. It’s the kind of no-nonsense place that gets the basics right and keeps you coming back.
