Sparks fly, hammers ring out, and raw steel slowly takes shape under steady hands at Stackhouse Knives, a working studio where craftsmanship is celebrated and shared. Equal parts workshop and creative hub, this is a place built on the belief that practical skills should be accessible to everyone.

Located in the heart of the Brewtown entertainment complex, the workshop strikes a careful balance between focused and relaxed. Classes are structured, but never intimidating. Whether you’re crafting your first blade or sharpening your skills, the teaching style is supportive and hands-on, guiding you through each stage without taking over. By the end of a session, there’s more than just a finished piece to take home - you also come away with the sense of capability and pride that comes from making something tangible from scratch.

The story began in a humble storage lock-up in Wainuiomata, where founder Shea forged knives after hours and taught friends and family the basics. Word spread, interest grew, and what started as informal lessons evolved into public workshops. When Lena joined in 2019, the studio expanded its offerings and refined its format, developing clearer learning pathways and broadening into blacksmithing, jewellery, and bone and stone carving. Today, it’s a collaborative space centred on skill-sharing and thoughtful design.

Up front, a small retail area showcases finished knives and handmade pieces, offering a glimpse of what’s possible. Beyond that, the studio hums with activity. When classes are underway, the workshop is open and alive - visitors can observe the process, ask questions, and witness the transformation of raw materials into functional art. It’s immersive, practical, and refreshingly real, a rare chance to go back to basics and work with fire, metal, and your own two hands.
