Sitting discreetly on Upper Hutt’s unassuming Main Street, Liberty Books has snuggled into its own little nook since relocating from Christchurch after the 2012 earthquake. Over the years it has grown a solid fan base and fostered a reputation as one of the coolest little independent bookshops in the country.

Upon entering, you're immediately embraced by a labyrinth of literature that beckons both the casual reader and the devoted bibliophile. Make no mistake, there are books here, and lots of them. Hardbacks, paperbacks, DVDs, and CDs of all genres are crammed into the ceiling-to-floor bookshelves, boxes, and are on just about any available surface inside and outside the store. Piles of books practically sprout from the ground in every corner, their glossy covers inviting you in for a closer look. This is a bookshop where, quite literally, you could lose yourself in the pages.

It’s not just a book lover’s paradise, however - the store also features a selection of ceramics and paintings, adding an artistic flair to the literary haven. Take your time perusing all that’s on display, and don’t forget to have a yarn with the owner, Rhys, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of his space and can find the right read for you without hesitation.

Liberty Books is definitely a book you can judge by its cover - from its old-school storefront to the endless rows of titles within, it’s a must-visit for any keen reader.
