Venture into the heart of the unassuming industrial hub that is Gracefield and you’ll find Miss Fortune’s, a warm, inviting beacon of light in this little corner of the Hutt.

A fast and friendly outfit that isn’t shy about standing out, Miss Fortune’s is a striking cafe that you can spot from a mile away. Jovial pastel hues dominate both the inside and the outside, bringing an unexpected but nonetheless welcome Wes Anderson-esque flair to the neighbourhood. With lush greenery set against all manner of oriental artwork, the decor is decidedly Vietnamese-inspired while retaining a Kiwiana core, as reflected in the cabinet delicacies on display. The heart of the cafe is arguably the oasis of a courtyard out back, and yes, dogs are welcome.

Simple Kiwi classics done well are what Miss Fortune’s is best known for, so the sausage rolls—baked all day and available in a meat-free version too—are a must-try. A Good Fortune Coffee, poured out to the tune of 500 cups a day, is the perfect accompaniment to your meal, or for something a bit naughtier, grab one of Miss Fortune’s famed milkshakes.

Lower Hutt’s industrial precinct isn’t exactly where you’d think to head for a slice of quintessential Wellington hospitality, but at Miss Fortune’s, you’ll find one of the region’s most charismatic little brunch spots.
