Big-hearted pies, proper kai, and a place that feels genuinely for the people – that’s the energy Puku Pies & Kai brings to the table. Like the unpretentious fitout, the goal here is simple: to serve good food that fills your puku and fuels you up, ready to tackle the day.

The vibe is relaxed and local, with manaakitanga at the core of everything. Service comes with warm smiles, friendly banter, and just the right amount of humour. And when you’ve got rows and rows of tantalising pies and donuts taking centre stage, there’s really not much more you need. The space is kept unfussy and practical, welcoming local regulars, pit stops, and anyone chasing a solid feed without the bells and whistles.

The pies here certainly mean business: hearty, generously filled units that can tip the scales at around 350 grams. The classics are done properly, with steak & cheese and mince & cheese delivering exactly what you want from a great Kiwi pie. Then there are the standouts: a rich, creamy pāua pie packed with minced pāua, and a bold jalapeño beef brisket pie that brings heat and depth in equal measure. Alongside the pies is a tempting spread of freshly baked sweet treats and well-stacked sandwiches, making it an easy choice for breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon pick-me-up.

Proudly Māori owned and operated, the ‘puku’ in the name reflects both what they serve and who they are. Their core values of manaakitanga, aroha, and kaitiakitanga guide how they show up for their community, whether it’s backing school fundraisers or making sure leftover kai is shared with local marae and community centres, supporting whānau and those doing it tough. It’s food made with purpose, and you can feel it in every bite.
