Self-described as a “funky ethnic” spot, Street Eats is a vibrant culinary haven that brings the zest of Indian and Asian street food to Upper Hutt’s burgeoning dining scene. Born from the passion of the team behind the Chaiwalla food truck - a huge hit with Wellingtonians at markets and events, Street Eats repurposes those mobile flavours into a dynamic dine-in experience.

Street Eats prides itself on its diverse, versatile offering - and that’s clearly reflected in the medley of colours and sensations throughout the space. Bright colours, led by their signature turquoise, are splashed across the walls, which are adorned with captivating murals that catch the eye at every turn. Chandeliers add a touch of elegance, contrasting playfully with the relaxed, homely vibe. Large windows offer beautiful views of the surrounding area, and given its focus on being family-friendly, a dedicated kids’ area - kitted out with a PlayStation and TV - keeps the young one entertained while the grown-ups unwind.

Though India-centric, the menu is a culinary trip through the streets of Asia, with dishes designed for sharing and discovery. Signature items include the crispy bhaji - fritters made from onion, potato, cauliflower, spinach, and chickpea flour and served with mint mango and date tamarind chutneys. The butter chicken is a classic option, and for those seeking bolder flavours, the Bang Bang cauliflower delivers a spicy kick, while the beef rendang is simmered in a rich Indonesian coconut sauce for the ultimate comfort meal.

Asian street food is one of the greatest culinary delights anywhere in the world, and Street Eats’ ambitious offering is a uniquely Kiwi tribute to that. What better way to embark on a gastronomic journey through Asia without leaving the comfort of Upper Hutt.
