Making its home in Upper Hutt is Humble & Grand, a homewares store stocking an assortment of contemporary and classic goodies. Led by husband designer duo Damo and Jono, the creative pair work together to carefully select products from NZ and around the globe for their store. Items range from artsy bits and bobs, such as candles, artisan foods and glassware to bigger ticket items such as dining chairs, tables and buffet units.
Operating under the ethos of ‘if we can see it in our home (which was recently renovated), then we can see it in yours too’, the pair's vision is to be the trendiest store in the Hutt. As a result, most of their own house is decorated with products from the store, and naturally, it’s one of the most stylish houses in town! Some of their favourite products from Humble & Grand include the Hinza bag, designed in the 1950s and now made from recycled plastics, and the Apostle Hot Sauce ‘hot honey’, which has recently become a bestseller.
The attitude at Humble & Grand has always been that everyone is welcome. Jono himself has designed decals to that effect, sharing them with over 150 businesses in NZ (so far) for display in their shops. Humble & Grand is proud to lead the way in Upper Hutt with its Pride campaigns and fundraising. Plenty of Pride merchandise is in store, each raising funds for LGBTQIA+ charities like InsideOut & Rainbow Youth.
Humble & Grand was a concept born out of tragedy when Jono was held up at gunpoint in a previous role. Following that terrifying incident, he took some time away from employment, during which time he began making crafts to sell online. His Instagram page blew up after supplying some contestants from The Block with a few of his pieces. Fast forward six months and the first physical store was opened; eight years later Humble & Grand has grown into a well-regarded Kiwi brand.
This store is one that exudes a certain charm, and with its recent shift (just down the road on Main Street), there is no time like the present to get yourself acquainted with the ever-changing, stylish stock Humble & Grand has to offer.
