Cultural Artwork Package

The drive along State Highway 1 on the Kaikōura coastline has always been regarded as one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. However, now with the addition of over 20 sites showcasing stunning cultural artworks that tell the rich local history, this stretch of the highway has become a destination in its own right.

The works of art, together with seven safe stopping areas, were created as part of the rebuild that took place along the highway after the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake (a mammoth operation that took around a year to complete). Local artists worked closely together with Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura and The Alliance’s design and landscaping team to develop each work of art, which represent the cultural significance and special history of the region. 

The works include pouwhenua & tekoteko (carved pillars), vapour blasted murals, laser cut corten steel and information panels. These are installed along a stretch of 60km from Oaro to Clarence, and invite locals and visitors to stop and take in the stunning views, and to reflect on and learn about the stories of this special part of the country.
