Hidden away in Otaihanga, NZ Native Oils is a place where the world slows down, where you’re invited to heal through the pure goodness of natural remedies.
The brainchild of owner Maria Brocklebank and her partner, Gary, the shop was born out of a fascination with the healing qualities of native plants. Merely stepping into the building will instantly lift your spirits. A gently babbling water feature at the heart of the store provides a serene soundtrack. Natural, beautifully crafted timber fittings play host to a myriad of jars and pottles, and the abundance of greenery is a nod to the space’s underlying ethos. The effect is one of calm and quiet discovery, a shop designed to feel more like a sanctuary.
Drawing on both traditional rongoā and European remedies, the team distils its own manuka and kanuka oils, creating a wide range of products onsite. Accordingly, the shelves are brimming with choice. There’s a complete skincare range, including balms and an impressive men’s collection. Essential oils and diffusers sit alongside aromatherapy blends for sleep, anxiety, and headaches. There’s copper jewellery, kitchenware, hair brushes, combs, and gua shas, while mushroom extracts, herbal teas, and supplements mean there’s always plenty to explore. Furry friends are looked after as well, with a dog skincare range.
In addition to a commitment to craft and care, NZ Native Oils lives and breathes sustainability. The handy refill service means you can bring your original container back and have it topped up. It’s just one example of the little touches that keep regulars venturing out to Otaihanga and coming back for more.
