Every Saturday, rain or shine, Montgomery Square in the centre of Nelson transforms into a hub of colourful tents where produce, arts, and crafts from the wider Nelson Tasman region exchange hands. The Nelson Market has been running since the late 1970s and is well known throughout the country for the fine produce and high quality artistry it showcases.
The market fills with locals from early morning and we recommend visiting before midday if you fancy seeing it at its best. Here, you can fill your market bag with local farm-to-market produce from seasonal fruit and vegetables to honey, cheese, baked goods, sweet treats, and beyond. Stroll through the various stalls and experience the region’s creative spirit first hand by meeting makers and appreciating their craft. Grab a coffee and sit down to soak in the great market atmosphere or make it a brunch date with friends or family.
There is always plenty to discover at The Nelson Market, and in fact, many of the stallholders only sell here. When you stumble upon something that tickles your fancy, it’s best not to deliberate for too long. If experiencing all that the region has to offer as well as supporting local makers, creators and growers is your thing, then market day is not to be missed.
