Located along the turnoff to the eponymous Rabbit Island, each of the six eco-friendly huts (they’re built with locally sourced and milled timber, and even stock eco-friendly toiletries) and single glamping tent come with cosy Queen-sized beds in minimalist, light-filled premises that face north, over the Appleby plains and Waimea Inlet.

Although the Rabbit Island Huts are clustered near each other, they still feel private and perfect for that intimate getaway, with views that overlook the native plantings on the property, which is gradually being restored to a natural wetland.

The huts have similar but slightly different amenities—three share external luxury bathrooms (complete with bath and shower), some have ensuites, one has its own private outdoor bath and three have TVs (so if you are planning to Netflix and chill, request a hut with a TV in advance). Everyone staying at the huts can access the complimentary common spaces, including the sauna, adorable converted caravan library, BBQ area and fully stocked kitchen. There’s also a larger interior space on the property perfect for retreats or group events. If you want to head out for the day, Rabbit Island and Mapua wharf are only a short drive away.

So whether you want to hunker down in your own piece of paradise to stay up late and stargaze (or wake up early to watch the sun rise), socialise and meet a few new folk (or both), you can tailor your holiday to your mood.
