54 Buckingham St, Arrowtown

In our opinion, few towns offer a more beautiful backdrop for showcasing great works by New Zealand artists. Case in point: Astor Bristed, a contemporary art gallery nestled in a charming courtyard, just off Buckingham Street’s main footpath in Arrowtown.

Founded in 2020 by Rosie Bristed, the gallery features a striking wall-to-wall window façade that bathes the interior in natural light and offers passersby an evolving view of the latest exhibition.

Each new exhibition creates an entirely unique atmosphere in the space. Astor Bristed hosts a year-round programme, showcasing mainly new to mid-career artists from around Aotearoa. Monthly rotations typically focus on the work of a single artist, with past showcases including Kerrie Hughes, Fergus Robertson, John Walsh, and Holly Zandbergen. Additionally, the gallery’s stockroom holds a collection of special pieces, which are always available to view.

Warm, welcoming, and accessible, Astor Bristed enriches Arrowtown’s cultural landscape, inviting art lovers to engage in thoughtful discussions with Rosie or simply enjoy a moment of quiet pondering.
