You can tell right away that Aurora Argentinian Bakery is the kind of place that was built from scratch with love, and that’s because it was. The brainchild of an Argentine family yearning for the baked treats they grew up with, Aurora is a warm, welcoming space that brings a slice of Buenos Aires to Wellington, one buttery medialuna at a time.

The vibe here is relaxed and full of heart. Natural light spills across the simple, industrial-style fitout, where small personal touches, such as family photos, the Argentine flag, and even a replica World Cup trophy, let you know this isn’t your typical Wellingtonian coffee spot. It’s the kind of space that invites you to slow down, order a café con leche, and enjoy a quiet moment or a good chat.

Every pastry, empanada, and sandwich here is made from scratch using authentic Argentine recipes, and it shows in the detail: the softness of the medialuna, the golden flake of handmade dough, the rich sweetness of dulce de leche. The Wagyu brisket empanadas with provolone are the sort of thing you plan your week around. Alfajores, chocolate cookie sandwiches filled with dulce de leche, offer a nostalgic bite of Argentine childhood.

All of this culminates in an institution that’s comfortable in its own skin and knows what it’s setting out to do. This isn’t a cafe chasing trends or trying to be clever. It’s a family-run bakery sharing the flavours and rhythms of home, with consistency, honesty, and care. From painstakingly shaping every medialuna by hand to remembering your usual order, everything is done with intention. And in a city packed with great coffee and food, that quiet authenticity is certainly noticed.
