Out in Lyall Bay on Kingsford Smith Street, Parrotdog Bar and its cellar door Nice. Takeaway share the same roof, bringing together a lively, retro-inspired experience that’s all about good beer and good chats.
Taking inspiration from the taverns and small town pubs of yesteryear, you’ll find a jukebox, taxidermy, brilliantly loud wallpaper amongst other quirky bits and bobs. This place sure doesn’t mind a bit of history, and the crew even report people bringing in their own dusty antiques which have gone on to grace the walls in some way, shape or form. Monthly art exhibitions feature in the space too and the Parrotdog team are happy to host the openings where art meets beer in the best way possible.
Then there’s the beer. Fifteen taps pouring straight from the brewery (which you can literally see through the windows) means you’re never short on options. The classics are always there, backed up by a rotating lineup of fresh brews if you’re keen to try something new. Hungry? You’re sorted. Big sandwiches, salads, and platters keep things simple and satisfying (don’t skip the Reuben) and the Workhorse Combo (sammie + tinnie) is a midweek no-brainer.
Next door, Nice. Takeaway keeps things cruisy. There’s a retro yellow feature wall, a glowing red “BEER” sign, Parrotdog merch, and a spotless walk-in chiller stocked with singles, six-packs and a few local extras like Six Barrel Soda. Ten taps are pouring for complimentary tastings so you can sip your way through, fill a flagon, or grab a rigger and be on your way. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable about the craft beer industry and always up for a yarn.
