Run by three women who really know their hair care, Erin, Juliet and Elizabeth were not content to open just another fast-paced salon where clients are rushed through and yucky stuff is tipped down the drains. Instead, the team at Refuge Hair Boutique felt strongly about creating a space that was both sustainable in product and performance.
 
Finding a home in Haitaitai was perfect for the trio who wanted out of the bustling city, and only an extra 10 minute drive from town (plus with plenty of parking spaces out front) means clients who come here immediately have a stress free arrival. Bookings for cuts, colour, treatments and styling all include a thorough consultation and the stylists make sure to book out plenty of time so there is a real chance to communicate, connect and feel well taken care of during your time there. Arrived early? Take a seat on the plush green sofa and be treated to a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit while you wait.
 
If you are getting the feeling that this is a place that has had plenty of love put into it; you would be right. There is greenery aplenty, the front bench was made by a family friend from reclaimed rimu wood, and the paint used is an eco-friendly batch – proof that the team is big on doing things right the first time round. Planet-friendly products mean everything used is vegan and cruelty free too, like Italian brand Davines, a family-owned, carbon neutral product supplier whom the team can not get enough of.
 
Do not be surprised to see clients greeted with a hug and a kiss on the cheek as they come through the door – this warm, smiley space feels as much like a place for people to simply get together and chat as much as it is a salon. The vibe is young and fresh without being overwhelming, and babies and toddlers are more than welcome too, making the boutique a super accessible place for mothers needing some caring of their own.
